Guest Blog-Summer Internship in Chile

Early in the morning on the fourth of June, I landed in Santiago, Chile– marking the beginning of a deeply impactful summer in a country that quickly made a place in my heart.  Over the course of eight weeks I made countless memories with new friends, improved my Spanish by leaps and bounds, and learned so much about the Chilean people and the impact of history on the country today.  I spent most of my time at Escuela Amor de Dios in Cerrillos, where I worked with migrant and disabled children as a part of my social work internship.

In a tiny office down the street from King’s Cross, I got to know Vika, a fitness instructor who came in once a week to lead senior mobility classes for Ukrainian refugees. Vika and I both worked for HealthProm, a small nonprofit in London focused on development projects in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Afghanistan as well as refugee support in the UK. Her mobility classes were one of HealthProm’s many refugee outreach programs, which included English conversation groups and career workshops.

I arrived in Kwale County, Kenya on the evening of June 1, 2023. As the sun was setting, I traveled up Kwale Road through the stunning tropical landscape towards the small town of Kwale: my home for the next month. My driver was quick to point out the maize fields that we were passing - a small reminder of home in Indiana.

Last year while at the US Embassy, I found myself frustrated at the political nature of their work which often translated into a barrier and reluctance to respond to human rights and developmental concerns. Apart from differing goals, I loved the life of a diplomat and the ability to explore the world while helping people (just in a different fashion than I preferred). Therefore my goal for this summer was to get a grasp of the work that is done by International non-governmental organizations (INGOs).

This summer, as a Policy and Research Intern at the US-ASEAN Business Council in Washington, D.C., I had the opportunity to become involved the intersection of these perspectives and discover how eager cooperation between stakeholders was not only common, and but also produced incredible results. The opportunity to pursue this internship was made possible through the generous support of the Tobias Center, who allowed me to expand my professional skills during my internship and prepare for a career in international development analysis.
