What does it mean for a country to develop, and how does development happen? This course explores a range of answers to this question, as well as what these theories mean for everyday practices of development workers in most of the world today. The course is equally theoretical and applied, with assignments focused on practical learning for future international organization, NGO, or government workers. Case studies draw on Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asian countries.

Human diseases are unevenly distributed across our planet. Several factors: environmental and biological, but also social and economic conditions contribute to this reality. Through this course we will study why the locations where diseases occur express a geographical space that emerges from the interaction of human and natural factors.

Explores theories and approaches of global development as well as the political, economic, social, and cultural forces shaping global development outcomes. Considers the role of geography, institutions, global markets and trade, civil society, and historical forces in exploration of the causes and consequences of development.
